Race Report

A hard race, I really enjoyed it even though I also suffered at times. I was in the 3rd group and we were giving 5 minutes to the 2nd group who in turn were giving 5 minutes to the front group. Scratch gave 3 minutes to us. Even though the circuit is tough we only did 3 laps which is approx 23 mils so I think it would have been a miracle for scratch to have got to the front of the race. As it was they didn't catch our group, and we didn't get near the winner. I think the race committee will have to have a good look at the handicapping. I noticed at the end of the race when I was given the result sheets that a complete newcomer who was in the first group the previous week (and had been dropped) had been put in our group. Apologies Paul, totally unfair and had I seen the sheets before the race I would have moved you into the front group.

Back to the race, on lap one we were straight into the draggy climb towards the hairpin, in most of that climb I ended up doing a 2-up with Aidan at the front, this is followed by a short dip to the hairpin and then another short climb. A wee gap opened, but Finn O'Kane (who had a really good race and really knows how to ride thru the pain barrier!) and a couple of others closed the gap, so it was mostly all together on the fast descent. Then it was the Deers Leap, Cathal (alias Retro man) was very strong here, he is a natural grimpeur, as is Aidan.

The cross headwind drag towards the pits saw several people doing their bit, I must mention Seamus and Finn Cummins, both rode very well and never stopped riding through. Tony M also rode well. The second time up the climb towards the hairpin saw real damage done by Cathal, at the top there was only Aidan, Cathal, Finn Cummins, Seamus, Tony and I left. Finn O'Kane lost a few metres but he got back on.

This group stayed together going into the final lap where we picked up Pearse, tho he didn't stay with us. Aidan and Cathal got away very near the top after the hairpin and we chased like mad to get back up to them so our wee group was together at the foot of the Leap. Halfway up the leap we caught supervet, and near the top Aidan and Cathal got away (followed by a lapped Davy McCall). Seamus, the two Finns and I tried our utmost to get back up to them on the finish straight. It was not due to lack of effort that they just stayed in front of us. Super stayed behind us and was easily able to come round all but Finn O'Kane out of our wee group in the gallop.

As I said, very enjoyable, tho I dread to think what my legs will be like in the 10 tonight! :o

ps Looking at the video of the finish Matty, Mert, Barry and others in scratch must have ridden very well as they passed lots of the 3rd group and were not far behind us, savage!

Excellent report John, I was riding on the rim most of the nite like most of us I think, a good hard race to test the fitness, I didnt know the 2 guys who did alot of the work at the front and managed to leave us on the deers leap, they were very strong. I was glad I was able to hang in with the break and get a placing, legs were rubber at the end, as Peter Stewart (coach) told me that if you didnt have slabbers and others things hanging out of you at the end of a race then you didn't give it your all, thats 2 weeks in a row that my lungs have near packed in.Oh and thanks to Micky Orr for the encouragement on the deers leap, nice ot hear abit of support from the sidelines.

Yes Micky Orr's encouragement was really good on the Leap. :)

I think he was just glad he wasn't suffering with us! ;D

It was nice to see him there and be able to congratulate him properly after the race for his win on Sunday.

another club race I had to miss :( sounds like it was a good one. Would have liked to give it a lash up dears leap ;D Went out and gave myself a 50 mile hammering instead spending most of the time swearing at the seemingly circular headwind >:(

Scratch Group was tough going last night. It was altogrther going up the drag to the hairpin, but started to breakup on the downhill section where speeds were approaching 50 mph. First time up the deers leap Matt was at the front with me on his wheel (that was the first and only time I would see his wheel). By the top of the deers leap scratch was down to about 10/11 riders and split evenly between Phoenix and Maryland riders. Next time up the drag was tough and I lost the wheel but was able to get back on again. Next time up the leap Matt jumped but was reeled backed before the turn. I think we lost Andy Ras at this point who seemed to be pushing a massive gear. Last time up the drag was again tough and managed to just hang on with encouragement from Leon. On the downhill Mert and a rider from Maryland got away but were within reach on the leap. Going up the leap for the last time our group split with Matt and Mert out the front and StevieP, Barry and myself out the back. Following a bit of hard work with one of the Maryland guys we nearly got back on and managed to finish about 15 seconds after Matts Group with Stevie P taking the sprint.

Hard nights racing, it was a pity that we didn't get up to the winning group, but it wasn't through a lack of effort.

Great encouragement from marshalls and onlookers around the course

Yes the encourgement from all the marshalls was great, Leon and Zulle at the top of the drag were doing lots of shouting.

I have to say I really like a race on a tough course, and it is fantastic training I think.

I'd concur with Davys account.

I couldn't believe it when Matty who was obviously in training mode, complete with winter jersey. Started doing intervals on the leap.

Second time up I though I'd go with him this time, and that was a mincestake.

Straight out the back.

Anyway glad I did that bit, but even so I feel a bit feckd so I'll take a bit of time off racing for a while.

Well done that wee fella, no matter the handicap he's still gotta do it.

Handicaps will come back to normal soon, so if you're getting an advantage don't complain.

The video of the Horseshoe bar rr is 40 mb in size, this is because the time between first and last across the line is over a minute, the Dundrod one will be even larger. If a race ends in a sprint (like Grove) then it is ok, you can do a 5mb video. We have just had our web space increased from 10 to 50 mb. Uploading 40 mb videos is not feasible with that sort of space.

If anyone has somewhere on the net with loads of space that I can upload videos to please let me know and I will happily upload them.

Or....we could stick them all on a DVD-R or CD-R at the end of the season and flog them to get a bit of money for the club. If we converted them to mpeg2 rather than quicktime then everyone could watch them on their DVD players at home. Maybe add a bit of msuic in the background as wel to mask out some of the rider comments as they cross the line. ;D

John, would it be feasible to reduce the resolution of the quicktime files so reduce file size for download. I know you're going to lose detail and hence not be able to see the finishers as clearly but something is better than nothing I guess.
